The Heritage Festival of our 75th Birthday, July 2008

Constructed 1933 and officially opened in July of that year, the venerable Log Cabin has housed the Saanich Pioneer Society for the past 75 years.  So it was only fitting in this year, 2008, also the sesquicentennial of British Columbia, that the society mark this date with a heritage festival.  We recreated the grounds and interior displays with demonstrations of the way things used to be done by the pioneer families and first nations peoples of the area in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Many visitors saw the museum for the first time and were also able to search the archives for information of any relatives that may have been catalogued by our volunteers.  Our members dressed in old costumes for the event, and several old vehicles and carriages were on hand to lend an authentic air to the festival.

Attendees of note were the mayor of Central Saanich, Jack Mar; the author of "150 Years In B.C.", Dave Obee; and our local MLA, Murray Coell.
